Dehradun

This beautiful city located in the Doon valley is one of the famous tourist place and is also the capital of Uttarakhand. The hill resort of is the gateway of the Garhwal region in the north Indian state of Uttaranchal.  Dehradun is surrounded by the Himalayas in the North, the Shivalik range in the south, the Yamuna river to its west and the Ganges to its east. Dehra is a variation of the word dera which means camp, or a temporary abode.
A group of Sikhs led by Ram Rai on being ordered by the Mughul emperor Aurangzeb to retire to the forests had pitched temporary tents in this area. Dun is the name of the valley and the word means low land at the foot of a mountain. It  is a popular tourist spot and a tour to Dehradun includes visits to the many tourist attractions in the city and its surroundings.
Accessible:
For transportation within and around Dehradun you may take your pick from the private bus services, tempos, auto rickshaws, tongas, cycle rickshaws and taxi.
Dehradun is well connected to other cities of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Delhi by regular bus services like Agra, Calcutta, Chennai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai and Delhi. There are road routes that connect Dehradun with tourist places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Shimla, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Nainital, Badrinath, Gaurikund, Gangotri, Kalsi and the Rajaji National Park.
The Jolly Grant airport, nearest from Dehradun is 25 km away. It is linked with flights to Delhi, which is major international airport of India. The excellent rail network links Dehradun with other important places of India. The Shatabdi Express, Mussorie Express and the Dehradun-Mumbai Express cater to the rail transport between Dehradun and Delhi, Mussorie, Mumbai, Varanasi, Calcutta and Lucknow.
Hotel:  a large number of luxury hotel and resorts are available to cherish the tourists. Hotel staff shower their hospitality with best of their warm welcome on the visitors. It is necessary to negotiate on accommodation facility of your own range. 
Tourist Attraction:
The major tourist attractions in Dehradun are
Tapovan :– it is believed to be the location of the ashram of guru Dronacharya
Robber’s cave :– it is a famous point and a lovely spot situated outside the city.
Tapkeshwar Temple :– an old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Dakpatthar :– lies about 790 meters above sea level at the foothills of Shivalik range on the banks of river Yamuna.it is a popular location offering impressive views of the Doon valley.
Central Braille Press :- this is the largest producer of Braille text books in India

  1. Very nice blog post. Dehradun is situated between the two most important rivers in India, Yamuna and Ganga. I would like to add Sahastradhara into the list of major tourist attractions in Doon valley which is known for its waterfalls.
